Christenings/ Baptisms
One of the most natural responses to the birth of a child is a desire to celebrate and say thank you to God. Every child is a miracle and it’s only natural for parents want to bring their children to church to ask for God’s blessing. Baptism and Christening are different names for the same event.
Here at Saint George’s we want to welcome you to bring your child to celebrate their life and pray for their future and we offer parents a choice of either Baptism or a Thanksgiving Service.
At a Baptism service parents and godparents make promises and commitments to bring the child up as a Christian. They promise to do their best to live good lives and be positive role models. These promises are made on the child’s behalf.
At a ‘Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child’ the child is blessed and the parents and children are prayed for. It’s a simple and beautiful way to welcome your baby into the world and into your family without making promises you might not feel ready to make.
Adult Baptism
If you wish to declare your commitment to your faith in the presence of friends, we also perform adult Baptism services.
If you want to find out more about either of these special services and how to book one, please come along any Sunday to one of our services which are held at 10.30am.
Confirmation
Confirmation is a special church service in which a person confirms the promises that were made when they were baptized. If you were baptized at a christening when you were a child, your parents and godparents made these promises on your behalf.
As a young person or adult, you may be ready to affirm these promises for yourself and commit your life to following Jesus Christ. At a confirmation service, you make these promises for yourself. Your friends and family, as well as the local Christian community will be there to promise to support and pray for you.
The local bishop will lay their hands on your head and ask God’s Holy Spirit to give you the strength and commitment to live God’s way for the rest of your life.
The Church of England offer a fact and FAQ sheet about confirmation here.
Funerals
St George’s is a Parish Church and we are here for everyone at all the main events of life, and death. A Church of England Funeral is available to everyone. We give you support before, during and after the service and for as long you feel it is needed. If you or your loved one has been a member of this, or any church, and no matter your faith or your doubts, you can turn to us and we will be there for you.
Booking
To book a Wedding or Christening or funeral at Saint George’s church please come along to any of our services and speak to one of the clergy or Duty Wardens and collect an application pack which explains how to book a date.
Not living in the area does not prevent you from having your Wedding or Christening at Saint George’s Church. If you have a connection with the church through your parents or grandparents or you used to live in the parish as a child or you went to St George’s School you are still eligible. We look forward to welcoming you, your families and your friends to our Church.
